Lucas expressed his eagerness to join the Aces and work alongside Becky Hammon, a figure he has long admired. “I am incredibly excited for this opportunity to work with Becky Hammon,” said John Lucas III. “I have been following her career since her WNBA days and her transition into coaching with the Spurs. I’m deeply impressed by her growth and the elite standards of the Aces organization. To be part of a team that consistently operates at such a high level, with two championships already, is a privilege. I am looking forward to contributing my expertise to these accomplished players and helping the team pursue even more championships.”
Reflecting on his career path, Lucas highlighted a personal connection to the WNBA and women’s basketball. “This move from the NBA to the WNBA is particularly meaningful for me. Early in my career, I had the unique experience of practicing against the Houston Comets, facing legends like Tina Thompson, Sheryl Swoopes, Kim Perrot, and Cynthia Cooper. Those experiences were formative and truly opened my eyes to the high level of talent and dedication in women’s basketball. This feels like a full circle moment. My passion is basketball, and I am eager to begin working with the Aces.”
John Lucas III arrives in Las Vegas with four seasons of NBA coaching experience. He served with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2017-2019), the Los Angeles Lakers (2021-22), and most recently with the Phoenix Suns (2023-24). His diverse NBA background provides a strong foundation for his role in player development with the Aces.
Prior to his coaching career, John Lucas III enjoyed a successful professional playing career from 2005 to 2017. His journey included stints in the NBA, G League, Italy, China, Spain, and Puerto Rico. Within the NBA, he played for eight seasons with multiple teams including Houston, Chicago, Toronto, Utah, Detroit, and Minnesota, where he first transitioned into coaching. Lucas also achieved success in the G League, contributing to the Colorado 14ers’ championship win in 2009 before the team relocated.
John Lucas III‘s collegiate career was marked by significant achievements. He was recognized as a 2004 All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year while at Oklahoma State. He also earned two All-Big 12 first team selections. He began his college career at Baylor University, earning Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors in 2002 before transferring to Oklahoma State after his sophomore year. His extensive playing and coaching background makes John Lucas III a valuable asset to the Las Vegas Aces as they aim for continued success in the WNBA.
