These vests serve as buoyancy aids and are equipped with emergency inflate valves. Experienced snorkelers are still required to wear the vest as a safety precaution, but can choose not to inflate it if they prefer to freedive along the reef. You are welcome to bring your own snorkeling gear onboard, with a few safety exceptions. Dive knives and weight belts are not permitted on the boats. To protect the sanctuary reefs, pole spears, spearguns, and lobster gear are also prohibited. As John Pennekamp’s Sanctuary Preservation Areas are “NO TOUCH” zones, dive gloves are not allowed in the water. Cameras are highly encouraged to capture the breathtaking reefscapes and macro shots. The seemingly sandy areas surrounding the reef are actually vital nursery habitats for young fish, crustaceans, and corals.
