John Glenn International Airport Set for Major Expansion with New Terminal Project

John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) is embarking on a transformative journey with its New Terminal Project, aimed at modernizing and significantly expanding the airport’s capacity. The Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA) has selected Hensel Phelps, in partnership with Columbus-based Elford, as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMaR) to bring this ambitious vision to life. This milestone project signifies not only a new chapter for CMH but also Hensel Phelps’ entry into the Ohio market, teaming up with a well-established local contractor, Elford.

The collaboration between Hensel Phelps and Elford combines national expertise in airport construction with local knowledge and community commitment. Elford President Mike Fitzpatrick expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the opportunity to work alongside Hensel Phelps, recognized as America’s leading airport builder. Together, they will collaborate with community leaders and a world-class design team to construct a modern airport hub for Central Ohio, designed to serve generations to come. The project also emphasizes inclusivity, with several Ohio-based Diverse Business Partners (DBP)/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE)-certified small businesses playing a crucial role during the preconstruction phase.

The driving force behind the New Terminal Project is the need to replace the existing terminal, which has been serving passengers since 1958. Originally designed for a much smaller volume, the current terminal now handles over eight million passengers annually, pushing it beyond its intended capacity. The new terminal, designed by Gensler in collaboration with local architect Moody Nolan, will be a state-of-the-art, 1,000,000 square foot facility. This expansion will dramatically increase the airport’s capacity to over 13 million passengers per year, accommodating the growing needs of Columbus and the surrounding region. Upon completion of the new terminal, the existing structure will be demolished, paving the way for the future of John Glenn International Airport.

Located across from the consolidated rental car facility (CONRAC) on International Gateway, the new passenger terminal is thoughtfully designed with five key components. A pedestrian bridge will seamlessly connect the terminal to the CONRAC and parking garage, enhancing accessibility for travelers. A striking entry canopy, featuring a 74-foot cantilevered structure, will span the north façade, welcoming visitors. The heart of the terminal will be the marketplace, a central gathering space offering airfield views, dining options, concessions, and retail pavilions. East and west concourses will extend from the marketplace, housing additional retail, concessions, and hold rooms leading to the boarding gates.

Currently in the design development phase, the John Glenn International Airport New Terminal Project is moving forward with anticipated construction commencement in late 2024. The projected opening date for the new terminal is set between late 2028 and early 2029. Matt McCaulley, Director of Operations for Hensel Phelps, underscored the company’s commitment to CRAA’s vision, emphasizing a collaborative and inclusive approach that maximizes benefits for local businesses and the Central Ohio community.
