John Cruz, a beloved member of the Salt Lake City community, passed away on August 16, 2022, at the age of 83. Born on December 8, 1938, John lived a full and impactful life, marked by hard work, resilience, and a deep love for his family, faith, and the outdoors. His life story is a testament to his strength and adventurous spirit.
Many knew John Cruz for his strong work ethic, demonstrated by his long career at Kennecott Mining from which he retired. He was also admired for his incredible fighting spirit, having overcome cancer multiple times throughout his life. Beyond his work and health battles, John embraced life with enthusiasm and a passion for exploration.
An avid outdoorsman, John could often be found cycling along the scenic Jordan River Trail and throughout the Salt Lake Valley. His adventurous spirit extended to his travels, with Alaska holding a special place in his heart. He frequently journeyed there for fishing and moose hunting expeditions, immersing himself in nature’s beauty. John’s hobbies were diverse and reflected his active lifestyle. Beyond cycling and outdoor pursuits, he was a skilled craftsman and enjoyed the strategic challenge of pool, often honing his skills at the local pool hall. For leisure and entertainment, John also enjoyed trips to Wendover, particularly for the buffet experience.
John Cruz’s life was also deeply rooted in his faith. He was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found great fulfillment in serving at the Salt Lake City Temple. His commitment to his faith was an integral part of his life and provided him with strength and purpose.
John is survived by his sister Vera, brother Santos, and his children: Rosalie (Lorenzo) Torres, Juan Cruz, Gloria Butler, Cynthia Hollenbeck, Jodi (Ron) Kranendonk, and Paul (Carmen) Cruz. His legacy continues through his twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a large extended family in Salt Lake City, UT, and El Paso, TX, and his loyal canine companion, aptly named Dog.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ladislao Cruz and Eleanor Zuniga Cruz, his daughter Juana, four brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services to honor and celebrate the life of John Cruz will be held on August 25, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1155 N 1200 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84116. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30 am to 10:45 am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at 1:00 pm at Memorial Lakeview Mortuary and Cemetery, 1640 E Lakeview Dr., Bountiful, UT 84010.
