John’s Roast Pork: An Authentic Philadelphia Food Experience You Can’t Miss

Philadelphia is a city synonymous with iconic foods, and while cheesesteaks often steal the limelight, John’s Roast Pork offers a deeply satisfying and equally Philadelphian culinary experience. Having finally made my way to this celebrated spot, I’m eager to share why John’s Roast Pork should be on every food lover’s itinerary when visiting the City of Brotherly Love. More than just a place to grab a quick bite, John’s Roast Pork is a testament to Philadelphia’s rich food heritage, serving up classic sandwiches that locals and visitors rave about.

Why John’s Roast Pork Stands Out

Initially, the name “John’s Roast Pork” might seem misleading if you’re on a quest for the quintessential Philly cheesesteak. Names like Pat’s or Geno’s might first come to mind, or perhaps local favorites like Tony Luke’s or Dallesandro’s. However, choosing John’s Roast Pork was a strategic decision, and here’s why it paid off. Convenience played a role; its location just off I-95 in South Philadelphia makes it easily accessible for travelers. More importantly, John’s Roast Pork has cultivated a reputation that extends beyond just roast pork sandwiches. It’s consistently recognized as a top spot in Philadelphia, often featured on “Best of” lists by locals. Adding to its prestige, John’s Roast Pork received a James Beard Foundation Award in 2006 for their roast pork sandwich, solidifying its place as a culinary landmark. The plan was always to experience more than just one sandwich in Philly, and John’s Roast Pork was the perfect starting point.

Navigating Your Visit to John’s Roast Pork

Finding John’s Roast Pork might take a few minutes, especially with the bustling atmosphere and street layout of South Philadelphia. Located beside railroad tracks in a modest brick building marked by blue awnings, it’s easily identifiable by the crowd gathered outside. Even on a cold December afternoon at 2 PM, the line was substantial, with about 20 people inside and 15 outside. However, the queue moves efficiently. Those ordering primarily pork, beef, or meatball sandwiches can often bypass part of the line, as the main wait is for cheesesteaks cooked to order. A covered patio next to the establishment offers an option for on-site dining. A menu displayed outside, though without prices, allows you to decide your order in advance.

Inside the Bustling Sandwich Shop

Stepping inside John’s Roast Pork reveals a double line of eager customers. A refrigerated display to the left offers drinks and chips. To order a cheesesteak, you head towards the grill area in the corner and place your order, giving your name. For roast pork sandwiches, the order station is at the center counter, where staff swiftly assemble these specialties. Payment is taken at the end of the counter. While prices aren’t listed on the menu, my two large sandwiches totaled $20.35. For my cheesesteak, I opted for a pizza steak with marinara sauce and white American cheese (eschewing the classic Cheese Wiz). The roast pork offers customization with provolone, sharp provolone, or spinach as additions, diverging slightly from the typical broccoli di rabe. Roast pork sandwiches are prepared quickly, but cheesesteaks, cooked fresh, require a bit more patience.

Despite the packed environment and fast pace, the staff maintains professionalism and patience, and the customers are notably courteous. It’s helpful to decide your order beforehand, especially as many first-timers visit. The sight of steak sizzling with onions and roast pork marinating in its flavorful juices is enticing. After about a 10-minute wait, sandwiches in hand, it was time to head out.

Savoring the Flavors: Cheesesteak and Roast Pork

Eating on the go meant compromising on food photography, but both generously sized sandwiches, around 13 inches long and heavily filled, were neatly wrapped in foil. John’s uses Carangi sesame seed rolls, a delightful departure from the usual Amoroso roll, boasting a satisfying crust and soft interior—perfect for holding the substantial fillings. The cheesesteak features tender, thinly sliced beef, offering a pleasant chew, complemented by a rich marinara sauce.

While the cheesesteak was excellent, the roast pork sandwich truly shone. John’s elevates pork with a blend of rosemary, pepper, wine, black pepper, and garlic, transforming it from ordinary to extraordinary. The pork is thinly sliced yet substantial, and the sharp provolone provides a perfect tangy contrast. Though I missed adding spinach on this first visit, the sandwich had just the right amount of moisture. It was a clear upgrade from the Dinic’s roast pork I had previously tried.

Final Thoughts on John’s Roast Pork

Initially hesitant due to the long line at John’s Roast Pork, I’m incredibly glad I persevered. The wait, approximately 50 minutes, was worthwhile, and the sandwiches are exceptional. Generously portioned and flavorful, one sandwich could easily serve as a satisfying lunch for two. A return visit is definitely on the cards, and next time, spinach will be added to the roast pork. The cheesesteak is also highly recommended, and perhaps a meatball sandwich will be in order too. With 80 years in business, John’s Roast Pork is clearly doing many things right, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Philadelphia.
